THE DRAKENSBERG
The majestic Drakensberg Mountain Range is a World Heritage Site full of extraordinary beauty, it is the spine that runs down the Eastern half of South Africa, separating the coastal regions from the central plateau, known as the Highveld. The Drakensberg Mountain Range stretches over 1,000km, reaching its highest peak of 3,482m at Thabana Ntlenyana. There are many spectacular hikes to be done in the Drakensberg, ranging from a few hours to a few days of climbing for the more intrepid and adventurous. The mountains are home to the second highest waterfall in the world – The Tugela Falls, although there is a debate between South Africa and the record-holder, Venezuela, about how a waterfall’s height should be measured.
The highest part of the mountain range forms the border between South Africa and Lesotho It is also here that you can drive on the famed Sani Pass high up into the mountains into Lesotho. There, you will find one of the pubs which claims to be the highest in Africa.
A trip to the Drakensberg Mountains makes a good excursion for anyone doing a safari in KwaZulu Natal, interested in visiting the historic Battlefields of South Africa, or simply one of the numerous activities including hiking, quad biking, white water rafting, 4×4 trails, mountain biking, horse riding, canopy tours, rock climbing, kayaking and fly fishing.
We organise hikes and treks, either tailor-made or with set departure dates, using experienced guides registered with the South African Mountaineering Development & Training Trust as Advanced Mountain Walk Leaders. We can arrange a partially or fully portered hike in the Northern Drakensberg of KwaZulu-Natal, with catering and cooking taken care of.
How to get there
The nearest airport is in Durban +-3,5 hours away and it is best to self-drive if you want to explore the mountains. Johannesburg is also in reachable distance, with a +/- 4,5 hours drive away from the Drakensberg region.
