MAURITIUS INTERIOR
Mauritius is a volcanic island, although the volcano is long extinct. Its legacy is still visible through the dense jungle vegetation that grows on the fertile ground it provided. In the south-western corner of the island you will find the best hiking, in the mountainous area of Chamarel, and at Black River Gorges National Park. Here you can walk through jungles and forests, past beautiful waterfalls, giant tortoises and awesome birdlife. You may not be able to see a dodo anymore, but you can see pink pigeons and green parrots, as well as many other colourful bird species. Something else worth leaving the beaches for is the Seven Coloured Earth Geopark in Chamarel, which is where an interesting sand geological formation has occurred.
Other areas of interest in the interior are The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pampelmousse, the Champs de Mars race track in Port Louis and of course, the island features multiple golf courses for those who like to hit a golf ball.
Where to stay
As the beaches are the most popular part of Mauritius, the interior provides a tranquil escape from the buzz of the crowds and if you do not only to go for a day visit but also stay for a couple of nights in the mountains then Lakaz Chamarel Lodge is the place we recommend. It is situated in the middle of the forest and is a peaceful retreat for people who want to recharge their batteries. They offer silent spaces for yoga and meditation and many little hiking trails from the lodge.
