PONTA DO OURO
'The tip of gold', which Ponta do Ouro translates to, is located at the very southern tip of Mozambique, at the border with South Africa's. It is therefor a great spot for a safari and beach, or safari and diving combination and probably more suitable for the latter, because accommodation around here is mainly simple and often self-catering. There is only one luxury lodge in the neighbouring town of Ponta Mamoli we work with, called White Pearl. It is the perfect getaway for someone who wants luxury completely off the beaten track.
How to get there
Ponta do Ouro is best accessed by road from South Africa. Richard's Bay and Durban being the nearest airports, 3 and five hours away. Access from Maputo is currently being completed. However, coming in via South Africa will remain the best option to get to Ponta do Ouro, as it is mainly booked in conjunction with a safari or dive holiday in South Africa's Kwazulu Natal region.
Activities
Ponta Do Ouro is known for its dolphins, seasonal humpback whale sightings, for its offshore diving and deep-sea fishing and some places also offer horse riding on the beach. The main activity is definitely diving though with a lot of big groupers, patches of colourful coral reefs and also some interesting macro marine life. You will find a lot information about the diving in Ponta do Ouro under 'Diving & Snorkelling'.
