NAMIBIA
Namibia, the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa is home to the oldest desert and some of the oldest tribes on the planet. A country twice the size of Germany but with just a fraction of the population, it is is the place to go to if your focus is not solely on wildlife, but also on breath-taking landscapes, history and culture; and certainly if you want to avoid crowded places. It is also the country that differs the most from all other African safari countries and probably the one that offers the widest variety in experiences.
Places to visit
The highlights of any first Namibia trip are climbing the world's highest dunes and enjoying the breath-taking scenery of Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft National Park, exploring the German coastal town of Swakopmund together with the shipwrecks and the world's largest seal colony on the Skeleton Coast, and of course, tracking down big game combined with watching crowded waterholes in Etosha National Park.
For repeat clients and those who are keen to venture off a little further, we highly recommend to travel north-west to Damaraland, where you can find desert adapted wildlife and meet people from the Himba tribe. Or you travel all the way south, to the second largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon, and the costal area around Luederitz with the German, diamond mining ghost town of Kolmanskop.
Flora and Fauna
The stunning flora and fauna offers desert adapted antelope species like the oryx, desert-dwelling elephants, lions, giraffe and rhinos that can be tracked on foot; cheeath and leopard that can be seen up close at one of the many conservation projects, 2000-year-old welwitschia mirabilis, the very photogenic kokerbome - just to mention the highlights.
How to travel
There is a similar variety in itineraries and accommodation. We have been to Namibia many times and met, tried, and tested many different service providers, car hire companies, lodges of all price-levels, campsites and routes. Whether you want to drive yourself, be driven and guided by a private guide, join a guided group safaris, or a luxury fly-in safari, all of it is possible and we can advise you and provide you with your dream Namibian trip.
When to travel
Namibia can be visited all year round and what is the best time depends as so often on where you wish to go exactly and how you want to travel.
June to September is commonly considered to be the best time to travel, as it is the dry-season, not too hot during the day (cold at night though) and very good for game viewing.
In October & November the temperatures start rising and can go up to C40 in the desert and it can be quite dusty. Game viewing however is then at its very best.
The rainy season usually lasts from late November & December to March. If you don't mind higher temperatures during the days though and some afternoon showers, then it is no problem to travel in the rainy season and you will not only be rewarded with beautiful green scenery, but you can also take advantage of reduced green season rates and some amazing specials, particularly at the higher end lodges.
April and May are our favourite months, as the air is still fresh from the end of the rainy season, everywhere is blooming and you find less visitors around than in the dry season - even though Namibia is not a country of big tourist crowds at any time of year.
