Originally named “Yuma” by Arawak Indians, the island was renamed “Fernandina” by Christopher Columbus in 1492. However, Long Island earned its current name because a seafarer felt it took too long to sail past the island, which is 80 miles long and no more than four miles wide at its broadest point. The Tropic of Cancer runs directly through the island, giving it two very different coastlines—the dramatic cliffs and caves of the east coast that front the crashing Atlantic waves, and the sandy edged lee side that calmly slopes into the Bahamas Bank. Long Island is home to the deepest oceanic blue hole in the world - Dean’s Blue Hole (renowned for freediving), historic twin churches built in the 1800s and one of the largest caves in The Bahamas.
Long Island has breathtaking cliffs, brilliant coral reefs and many serene beaches. The island is a haven for fishers, divers and boaters, boasting excellent bonefishing and thrilling encounters with sea life. The island’s western shore is more tranquil where visitors will find soft pink- and white-sand beaches that gradually slip into peaceful turquoise waters.

Stella Maris Resort
Indigo Safaris can arrange dive packages with several different accommodation options to suit varying budgets and preferences. Our favourite option for families and groups who wish to dive but also enjoy other activities (or for non-divers or families with children) is Stella Maris Resort.
Positioned on a magnificent and secluded headland surrounded by ocean views Stella Maris Resort is an intimate plantation-style Bahamas hotel offering a wide range of tropical Bahamas vacation rentals and accommodations, from panoramic ocean-view rooms to 4-bedroom water front and beach front Bahamas bungalows, some even with a private pool. We think it provides the perfect Long Island Bahamas resort getaway for leisure travellers, family vacationers, private pilots and active water sportsmen.
Tropical accommodations and inclusive island activities make Stella Maris a perfect Bahamas family resort or romantic getaway too. Many guests return year after year as the atmosphere is seductive and comforting in its familiar and constant style – it feels as if you have stepped back into a breezy innocence of the 1960s with modern twists of course like rapid transfers, an up to date dive centre (operated by Stella Maris Watersports and located a five minute transfer ride away on the Stella Maris Marina) and of course wifi. Guests can dress up for a formal evening dinner or choose to self cater as the hotel will arrange grocery deliveries by arrangement which suits many family groups well.
Activities:
Choose from 4 pools including a rock-cut tidal-filled incredible salt water ocean-side pool, a bar-side (and beach-side) pool and play area for children, a gym, cycle hire, watersports, regular cave bbq’s, hard tennis courts, mangrove kayak trips and many different beaches. You will find a map and description of the beaches in your welcome pack on arrival along with a basket of tropical fruit and a drink.
The resort provides daily morning and afternoon transport to “Love Beaches” just south on the Atlantic Shore and Deal’s Beach which is perfect for wading, swimming, sunfish sailing and hammocking, located just south of the resort’s marina; and to “Cape Santa Maria” which has picture perfect white powder sand located on the leeside and has been listed by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the top 10 beaches in the world.
