MAKALALI GAME RESERVE
Makalali is one of the lesser visited private reserves making up the Greater Kruger Park, as it is one of the youngest reserves. The competitive advantage of this is there are less lodges on the reserve, meaning you will see fewer vehicles and get a greater feeling of having the reserve all to yourself. The reserve overlooks the Drakensberg Mountains, which make a beautiful backdrop for sunsets.
Wildlife
Makalali is home to the Big 5, as well as a number of other large mammals, including hyenas, giraffes, cheetahs and zebras. For the bird lovers, the endangered Ground Hornbill can be found here, as well as several species of raptors. The wildlife is not as dense as in the more established reserves, but when you do find the animals, you won't have to share them dozens of other vehicles.
Accommodation
There are few lodges in Makalali, which can all be classed as midrange or luxury. Due to the reserve not being as popular as Sabi Sand or Timbavati, the luxury lodges are very competitively priced.
