SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa is a world in one country. The country truly has something to offer for everyone, even for returning clients. From wildlife safaris in the world-famous Kruger National Park, the lesser known but also excellent Madikwe Game Reserve and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, to city breaks in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town, and it's adjacent rural charm vineyards, to world-class diving, South Africa is able to offer a breadth of sights and experiences that are hard to beat. Where else will you be able to see lions and penguins in the same country, in the space of a week? And we mustn't forget about the tremendous history and culture in the country which has 11 official languages. For any first-time visitors to Africa, South Africa is the ideal country to begin your love affair with this continent and due to its weak local currency, South Africa also offers exceptional value for money for most overseas visitors.
How to get there
Once the pariah of the world for its policies of apartheid, today South Africa is easily accessible with direct flights from many European countries, America and Australia. There are 3 international airports, the main hub being Johannesburg and then Cape Town and Durban on the East Coast, plus many domestic airport to which you can connect to, if you do not wish to drive.
How to get around
It is simple to get around South Africa, and even more so when you have one of our safari experts guiding you. You can easily fly between all the major tourist destinations and airport transfers can be arranged to get you from the airport to wherever you need to go, as well as road transfers between different areas in one destination. For the more adventurous, it is also possible to rent a car and drive yourself. The roads are comparable to what you might find in Eastern Europe.
For something truly different, you can catch one of the luxury trains. Now, why is catching the train so exciting and different in South Africa? Well, because South Africa is home to Rovos Rail, recognised as the most luxurious train in the world. Some of our safari experts have seen the train carriages and we can confidently tell you that it competes with any 5-star hotel you will find in Europe or North America. The best part about train journeys is that you get to see multiple destinations without having to repack your bags every day. You can watch the countryside go past while enjoy a book and sipping champagne.
There is also a more modest option called the Blue Train, for those who do not wish to wear a suit to dinner every night and a more classic, rather than luxurious option, called the Shongololo Express.
Our favourite train journeys can be found on the Southern African Combinations page, but there are many more which can be requested.
With so much to offer, it can be difficult to know where to start, which is why we have narrowed it down for you. Below, you will find links to the most popular destinations in South Africa, where you can learn more about what is on offer, including itinerary suggestions. If you are still unsure, or want to combine more than one destination, get in touch with one of our safari experts who will be able to show you how to get the best out of South Africa.
