MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
Mikumi is Tanzania's fourth largest national park and the most accessible from Dar es Salaam, since the completion of the tarred road. It shares a border with the much larger Selous Game Reserve and has an abundance of animals to view. Safari-goers usually stop at Mikumi on their way to Selous or Ruaha, just for one night, but longer stays are possible too.
Mikumi is one of Tanzania's less visited national parks, which means it is a good place to escape from the crowds often associated with the northern national parks, it is however a low-key destination only.
Wildlife
The park is home to the Big 5, as well as a host of other animals, including wild dogs, zebra, eland, hippos and giraffes.

where to stay
From our visit to Mikumi National Park, we have first-hand knowledge of the lodges and below you can find the ones we most commonly use. Those lodges include mainly our favourites sorted from low-key to deluxe, which are usually smaller lodges with very personalised service, but also some bigger places, if they are the best or only option available.
