KLASERIE GAME RESERVE
Located east of the town of Hoedspruit, Klaserie Game Reserve covers 600 square kilometres of gently undulating Lowveld acacia scrub, dissected by seasonal rivers, and is one of the largest privately owned reserves in South Africa. It shares the same entrance gate with Timbavati Game Reserve and only a road going east from the gate is separating the two.
Since its inception in 1969, Klaserie has had a keen eye focused on keeping commercial and human impact in the reserve to a minimum. As a result, it is one of the most unspoilt reserves in the area. Limited visitor numbers allow for guests to spend more time at game-viewing spots observing the wildlife. It feels like a relatively pristine stretch of wilderness, with game-viewing close to the levels associated with more premium brand reserves. Klaserie is also known for its excellent walking safaris.
Wildlife
As well as the Big 5, Klaserie is home to endangered African wild dog, southern ground hornbill, and white-backed vulture. Visitors will spot hordes of plains game on the open veld while the Klaserie River is popular with hippos, elephants, rhino, and buffalo herds.
Accommodation
Lodges here are very competitively priced compared with those in the better-known private reserves like Sabi Sand and Timbavati and have no top-end lodges, as the focus still lies more on the actual safari experience. However, most lodges are still on a very high standard, all offering a very personalised service, due to a small hosting capacity. Our three favourites are the exquisite Simbavati Camp George for its location and beauty; Boabab Ridge, offering amazing value for money, and nThambo Tree Camp for its unique style. For more lodge options, please have a look below.
How to get there
The closest airport is Hoedspruit airport and the closest airstrip for charter flights is be located in Timbavati next door. For those on a budget, or who simply like to travel overland to also see something of the land in-between the airports we can organise private or shared road transfers, which can also include the scenic Panorama Route.
