KAPAMA GAME RESERVE
Kapama is one of the smaller Greater Kruger Reserves with 130 square kilometers in size and is sandwiched between southern Balule on the western and Thornybush Game Reserve on the eastern border. According to a local legend, Shangaan chiefs who demonstrated acts of extreme bravery were honoured by being reborn here as lions. Kapama was the name of the last chief of this revered bloodline. Maybe that's the reason why the reserve is known for good predator sightings... Even though it isn't our first choice in the Greater Kruger Park, it is a good place for safari and it offers the special attraction of a special Elephant Experience, for those who have a special interest in the gentle giants.
Wildlife and activities
Kapama is home to more than 40 different species of mammals including the Big 5, as well as 350 bird species. Visitors get the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in the wild with twice-daily guided game drives, nature walks, and once-in-a-lifetime elephant encounters. Jabulani Safari offers the Elephant Experience, which is a chance to get up close and personal with a herd of orphaned elephants to learn more about the complex lives of these giant mammals.
Accommodation
There are only 5 camps within Kapama Game Reserve, of which we feature the 4 smaller ones, since we find river lodge too hotel like and too big in size to deliver a personal and authentic safari experience. Each of the 4 properties offers something different, from luxury tented to treehouse and also classic lodge style. Romantic sleep-outs are possible as well.
How to get there
Kapama is situated close to Hoedspruit Airport and all the lodges include complimentary airport transfers from there, plus, Kapama has its own private airstrip for charter flights too. And as to all Greater Kruger Reserves - for those on a budget, or who simply like to travel overland to also see something of the land in-between the airports, we can organise private or shared road transfers, which can also include the scenic Panorama Route.
