LAZY LAGOON
Imagine a private island in the Indian Ocean, the waves lapping the white sandy beach just metres from your bed. The day stretches ahead with promises of sun, snorkelling and mangrove exploration, only interrupted by freshly prepared meals. Get away from it all to relax and unwind with six miles of uninterrupted beach.
Built using local materials and traditional Swahili architecture, all the buildings have tall, steep roofs designed to catch the sea breezes and keep you cool.
With just 12 en suite beach bandas with twin or double beds, and an upstairs ‘loft’ with two twin beds, ideal for older children, each spacious banda has both an upstairs balcony and a porch with unimpeded sea views and access straight on to the beach.
There can’t be many more relaxing ways to start a day than to watch the early morning ngalawas, traditional two-man dugouts, go out fishing, whilst sipping a coffee on your own veranda, or walking down to the beach to look in rock pools in your pyjamas.
The main dining and living areas are spacious and airy, with high ceilings and cool wooden floors; the perfect escape from the midday sun, whilst looking out onto the white sand and shimmering sea.
Soak up the evening sun in the upstairs sunset lounge, which overlooks the swimming pool and the Indian Ocean beyond. The Swahili-style daybeds are perfect for the quintessentially safari pre-dinner G&T.
Activities
If lazing about on the beach or in the Swahili daybeds isn’t your thing, there is plenty to keep you busy; from snorkelling to kayaking, or historical trips to Bagamoyo or sun-drenched dhow trips. Wind and tides permitting, you can take out a Laser I or Laser II, with an experienced manager to guide you. At most times of the day, the lagoon is largely sheltered from the onshore winds and makes an ideal spot to learn to sail. The coral off the coast is home to a myriad fish, anemones and other creatures to drift over and marvel at. For the more ambitious, a dhow trip can take you further out. Or you can take out one or two-person kayaks to explore the coastline around the lodge from a different perspective.
Getting there
We will book a road transfer for you from Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo, from there, Lazy Lagoon is accessible by boat. The boat crosses several times per day so we will arrange to ferry you across on the most convenient crossing. The total transfer time will be 2 hours. Or if you want to skip the traffic, we can fly you from Dar up to Bagamoyo.
