From tiny hatchlings scrambling toward the sea to adults voyaging thousands of kilometres across ocean basins, turtles live extraordinary lives. There are seven recognised species of sea turtle, and on our marine safaris, you’re likely to encounter:

• Green turtles – gentle grazers, often seen feeding on seagrass or resting on reefs.
• Hawksbill turtles – reef dwellers known for their striking patterned shells and coral-cleaning diets.
• Loggerhead turtles – robust and reclusive, recognised by their powerful heads and deep dives.

Despite their resilience, all sea turtle species are listed as vulnerable or endangered, facing threats from plastic pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, illegal harvesting, and fishing by catch.

Where to See Sea Turtles with Indigo Safaris

• Tanzania: Mafia Island & Fanjove Private Island.

       Mafia Island Marine Park is a sanctuary for both hawksbill and green turtles, with clear                   waters perfect for snorkelling and diving. Fanjove’s untouched reef system offers private               encounters with turtles in an idyllic setting.

• Mozambique: Quirimbas & Bazaruto Archipelagos.

       These remote island chains are prime turtle habitats, with green and hawksbill turtles                   nesting on sandy beaches and foraging in the lagoons. Expect sightings on nearly every dive.

• Seychelles: 

​       The Seychelles are a haven for hawksbill turtles, with nesting often observed during the day         – a rarity elsewhere. You’ll also encounter greens and hawksbills while snorkelling or diving           in the warm Indian Ocean waters.

• South Africa: iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

      A UNESCO World Heritage Site, iSimangaliso’s protected beaches are nesting grounds for            loggerhead and leatherback turtles. Join guided night walks from November to February for          the chance to witness nesting or hatching events.

• Indonesia: Raja Ampat & Komodo.

        Home to some of the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems, these remote islands                are regular haunts for green and hawksbill turtles. You’ll spot them while diving spectacular          reefs, often resting in rocky outcrops or gliding along drop-offs.
