Kruger Safaris

We can arrange fully-inclusive safaris in the Kruger, typically from 2 to 6 nights in length, with pick-ups and drop-offs from Johannesburg airport included. We work with a range of accommodation, from tented camps to luxury lodges, with game drives conducted by experienced guides in specialised open-sided safari vehicles, perfect for game-viewing, and half-day walking safaris with armed rangers. The best areas are the private game reserves bordering the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands and Timbavati being our two  personal favourites. We have many options, you can find some of them on this page, but please contact us for more options.

For those pushed for time, or wanting to save time, a fly-in safari can also be arranged with lodge accommodation with daily flights from Johannesburg to Sabi Sands or Timbavati concessions on Fedair (we can book these), or to Nelspruit on SA Airlink with a road transfer.
You wing your way from Johannesburg International Airport to either Hoedspruit airport or the closest Game Reserve airstrip, where your ranger will be on hand to welcome you. Guests on the morning flight are transferred to their lodge where they will have a chance to unwind before High Tea at 15h00. You then board the open game viewer for a four-hour afternoon/ night drive. Your ranger will be in radio contact with the chief ranger and other rangers to stay informed of the movements of the animals.
After sunset, your ranger will use a powerful spotlight to locate nocturnal animals. Dinners in our open boma under the African sky will be traditional African meals. Guests arriving on the evening flight will be transferred to their lodge intime for dinner.

Sabi Sand

Sabi Sand lodges start at 3155 ZAR per night per person and go up to 10,000 ZAR pppn. We recommend a minimum of two nights in one camp/lodge, and up to six nights in one reserve. Within each reserve camps/lodges are on different concessions with traversing rights on some other concessions, but not all of the concessions on the reserve. It can therefore be interesting to change camp/lodge to access different types of terrain, landcape, and watering holes. It's also possible to combine reserves: Timbavati, Sabi Sand, and Lukimbi have very different landscapes, from relatively dense bush in Sabi Sand to more open areas in Timbavati and Lukimbi.
The reserve creates excellent chances of seeing African painted dogs (aka Cape hunting dogs, Wild dogs), and leopard, particularly Sabi Sand, arguably the best place in South Africa, and possibly the world, to see them. Our Big Five sighting record time is 2 hours and 53 minutes, including a tea break.

Timbavati and Klaserie

These two neighbouring, prime game viewing reserves are close to Hoedspruit airport, making access relatively simple and efficient. They provide a good variety of habitats, with riverine woodland, open plains and some denser areas. As well as the big five, wild dogs and cheetahs are often seen here, we've even found the dogs by the side of one of the main tracks finishing off a tasty impala. There are some beautiful small properties here, and arguably even better value for money than Sabi Sand properties. They work great in combination together on a four, five, or six-night itinerary, or can also be combined iwth Sabi Sand.

Lukimbi Game Reserve

Another option is the excellent Lukimbi Game Reserve, 37,000 acres (15,000 hectares) of exclusive use prime game and wilderness area within the Kruger NP.

Lukimbi is located in the easily accessible southern portion of the Kruger National Park and is home to the Big Five and a wide variety of other animals and birds, which roam freely in their natural habitat. The open vistas here are an excellent contrast to the more closed in woodland of Sabi Sand and is therefore an excellent match with a Sabi sand stay, or great on its own for those who would like quicker access to top-notch game viewing, without the crowds of the main Kruger areas.

Game drives in open Landrovers are conducted twice daily on exclusive private tracks, inaccessible to general Kruger park visitors. Alternatively, guests can take guided walks or relax in the excellent lodge.

With just one lodge with16 spacious suites, it's a great place to get away and unwind. The lodge combines luxury and modern African decor with private decks and river views. The Giant Eagle Owl and King Cheetah suites each include a private pool and second bathroom.

Rates start at 5000 ZAR pppn, with road transfers between the reserve and Nelspruit airport at 800 ZAR each way.
A five-night combination with 2 nights at Idube Lodge in Sabi Sand GR, and 3 nights at Lukimbi Lodge costs 21,400 ZAR per person sharing, exclusing transfers.

 Balule Game Reserve

Balule, to the north and west of Klaserie and Timbavati is a less herarlded reserve, but one that we enjoy visiting. Since the fences on the eastern boundary of the reserve came down, game roams freely from across the greater Kruger area and into Balule. Whilst you will wsee a fence line on your way in and out of the reserve, we work with a handful of different style properties here that give excellent value for money and a great safari experience.

Budget Balule and Kruger National Park combined itineraries

A typical five-day budget  itinerary:

Day 1: Pick up from your hotel in Gauteng or Johannesburg Airport and travel via the highveld grasslands to the subtropical Lowveld. At Tremisana Game Lodge in the Balule section of the Kruger National Park, unwind at the bar, enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool and relax in the beautiful tropical gardens. Board an open Landcruiser for a three-hour sunset drive, your first opportunity to experience the varied fauna and flora of Africa. Watch the magnificent African sunset and, after dark, use spotlights to locate nocturnal animals. Dinner in the Boma will be a traditional South African meal. Night at private game lodge/luxury lodge.

Lilac breasted rollerDay 2: At sunrise drive to a remote spot to enjoy a 4h Bush Walk. Your ranger will lead you through the bush at a pace you can handle. The thrill of following big animals will remain with you forever. Adrenalin surges will be acute, even if your ranger is adequately armed. Return to Tremisana for brunch. At 14h30 we enjoy an afternoon game drive. Transfer to lodge where accommodation is in tents/treehouse rooms/private game lodge chalet /luxury lodge.  Dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Drive to Orpen Gate of Kruger on a custom-built open-sided game viewer. You will have an opportunity to view game  without intervening glass windows and also listen to and smell the denizens of  the bush. We have regular stops at picnic spots, restcamps and places of interest. The Orpen-Satara-Nwanedzi region’s open plains attract large herds of zebra, giraffe and antelope, that, in turn, attract many predators. In fact this zone has the highest concentration of lions in Africa.
Day 4  on a four-day trip: After breakfast, drive via the Panorama Route to see the scenic splendours including the Three Rondawels and the Blyde River Canyon. Return to Gauteng in the late afternoon. Airport drop-off.
Day 4 on a five day trip: After breakfast, we travel to the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre for injured and orphaned animals and birds. You will have an opportunity to get close and personal to some of the residents, including lions and leopards. After lunch, you drive to Tremisana. At around 17h00, we enjoy another open vehicle game drive in the Balule Game Reserve, home to numerous animals including the Black rhino.
Day 5: Enjoy a sunrise walk. After breakfast, drive via the Panorama Route to see the scenic splendours including the Three Rondawels and the Blyde River Canyon. Return to Gauteng in the late afternoon. Airport drop-off.
