African Wild or Painted Dog

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park, Set in the heart of Zululand, is the oldest game neserve in Africa where the Zulu kings Dingiswayo and the legendary Shaka hunted and set up the first conservation laws. The park is the birthplace of rhino conservation, breeding the species back from extinction (less than 20 white rhinos world wide in 1900 to more than 10,000 today). It is also home to the four other species of the 'Big Five' - lion, leopard, African buffalo, and elephant. There are also cheetahs, giraffes, blue wildebeest, impalas, zebras, kudus, hippos, crocs, and the very rare (and difficult to spot) African wild dog, and over 300 bird species. Driving and walking safaris (of varying lengths) with armed rangers are possible, and experiencing the African bush on foot is truly extraordinary.

There is a range of well-priced, good accommodation inside the national park. You can self-drive around the park during daylight, or go on guided game drives by day or by night in special game-viewing vehicles.

Primitive Trails - 3 or 4 nights
Truly get back to nature with these trails. You carry your own kit, sleep under the stars around a camp fire, in the wilderness areas of the park, living with the Big 5. A unique and amazing experience.
Explorer Trail
This is a combination of the shorter trails with two nights in the permanent tented camps and two nights sleeping out under the stars, as on the Primitive Trails.

Hiking and trekking in KwaZulu-Natal

We organise hikes and treks, either tailor-made or with set departure dates, using experienced guides registered with the South African Mountaineering Development & Training Trust as Advanced Mountain Walk Leaders. The guided hikes are in the Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal, an internationally acclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Interested in climbing the highest peaks in Southern Africa, including Thabana-Ntlenyana, 3,482 m; Mafadi, 3,450 meters; Champagne Castle, 3,377 m; and Giant's Castle, 3,315 m?  Contact us to arrange your opportunity to climb some of the highest peaks in Southern Africa!
We can arrange a partially or fully portered hike in the Northern Drakensberg of KwaZulu-Natal, with catering and cooking taken care of. No more getting to the end of a hard day's hiking and having to cook a meal in your tiny tent.  Now you can relax in a large "mess tent" with your fellow hikers and enjoy a meal cooked for you prior to turning in for a good night's sleep!
Guided hikes cost 900 ZAR per day/night incuding tents. Airport pick-ups can be arranged too. Drop us a line to find out more about scheduled hikes and itineraries.
