Ras Mohamed Marine Park, Tiran Strait Reefs, the Dunraven, and the Thistlegorm

Shark ObservatoryEgypt's Sinai Peninsula Red Sea resort is the most popular dive destination amongst European divers for good reason. With good weather and viz all year round, protected reefs, good fishlife, and healthy corals there is plenty to see underwater. Coupled with it's proximity to Europe, cheap flights and an abundance of hotels at reasonable rates, it is the place to go for a quick dive fix.

Yet amongst the hundreds of hotels and dive centres, chooisng the right one is not always easy. Indigo Safaris has chosen to work with the Red Sea Dviving College for a number of reasons. One of the first diver training centres in the north, the Red Sea Diving College was purpose-built from scratch in 1991 and benefits from a prime location a couple of minutes walk from the jetty. The College staff are friendly but professional and very well organised. There are free storage lockers for personal items, and your dive kit is takne to and fromt he secure storage at the centre every day. All you have to do is mount your BCD and regs on your cylinder on the boat each morning. Groups are small, with generally no more than six divers per guide (who are all instructors), and most languages are catered for. On top of all that, the rates are great, and nitrox is free. Oh, and it won Diver Magazine's Dive Centre of the Year award five years in a row.

Where to stay

5* accommodation - Moevenpick, Naama Bay

Located on the eastern end of the bay, the Moevenpick is far enough away from the bustle of the centre, but only a 10-minute stroll  through private and well-lit gardens to Naama's seafront promenade lined with restaurants and bars. The Moevenpick has five private beaches, four restaurants, a kids' club, and baby-sitting services. The combination of the location, the rooms, and the service make this our favourite destination in Sharm.

DahabLocated an hour north of Sharm-el_sheihk airport, Dahab is quite different to Naama Bay and modern Sharm. Firstly, diving is mainly shore-diving; pick-up trucks take you to the entry points where you sling on your BCD and walk into the water. Most of the sites require minimal walking with kit.

Thre is good soft and hard coral life onthe reefs here, that can be sheer walls, sloping reefs, or shallow aquariums. Two of the best-known sites here are the Blue Hole and The Canyon. There are plenty of reef fish around, as well as larger creatures like turtles and octopus, but bigger fish and large schools more commonly seen down in Ras Mohamed and Tiran are rareties up at Dahab.

In terms of the town, you won't find the psuedo-palaces of Sharm, nor the bright neon of downtown Naama Bay. There is a nice seafront promenade with a good range of restaurants and bars, but it is a lot more peaceful and low cost. 7 nights B&B with 12 dives comes to just €347 per person (around £275).

Coastline and mountains south of DahabThere are also plenty of non-diving activities to endulge in with trips to St Catherine's Monastery or Mount Sinai to watch the sunrise over the desert and the mountains, yoga classes, kite-surfing, and camel safaris. Or combine the two and go on a dive trip by camel to the beautiful Ras Abum Gallum to the north (the camel stays on the beach). It is also possible to go a boat-based dive trip to Gabr-el-Bint to dive the Gorgonian-covered reefs to the south.

Great sea views in one direction, mountain views in the other, excellent value for money, and just five minutes from the centre of Dahab in a two euro taxi ride. There is a decent restaurant and an excellent dive centre on the premises.
